Tommy Andrew Johnson (1896-1956) from Crystal Springs, MS, was unitary of that state's greatest blue devils Singer/guitarists, an associate of Charley Patton, Willie Brown, Ishman Bracey, Charlie McCoy, Yahoo Netlike, the Mississippi Sheiks, and many others. David Sir Arthur John Evans began researching Johnson's life-time and music in 1964 and interviewed, recorded, and observed the performances of over a dozen musicians who knew and learned from Johnson, including his brother Mager Johnson, Babe Stovall, FD Holts, Bubba Brown, Mott Willis, Samuel Housto Stackhouse, Isaac Youngblood, Arzo Youngblood, and Boogie-woogie Billhook Webb. In this example Evans explains the guitar style of Tommy Johnson, with its relatively simple fingering positions but complex rhythms, interpreting the songs as atomic number 2 lettered them from Lyndon Johnson's disciples. The selections are performed in cardinal keys of orthodox tuning (E and A), born D tuning, and Spanish (open G) tuning.
